the Beauty of Self Care

Ancient texts and modern philosophers speak of our universe as a totality — an organic whole. Today, this holistic vision is not one commonly embraced or understood, and I believe it is why self care is often so mistaken, and under-appreciated.

I see self care as so critically important, because I have learned that everything starts with — You. It is the relationship you have with yourself that sets the tone for every relationship you have –> that is, the part represents the whole. Beauty is a byproduct of a healthy self care routine. When you start taking care of yourself, you start feeling better, looking better and you start attracting better into your reality. Beauty comes from being aligned with our authentic self.

Self care is how you take your power back. The practice of self care brings your attention back to your self, so you can analyze your feelings, pay attention to the sensations in the body, feel your breath, engage in self-examination and survey your situation and surroundings from a higher perspective. It helps you take back control of your thoughts, actions and behaviour. It helps you create new stories and new patterns. When you truly honour your needs through self care, you step into your authentic self. Through self care, we connect with out truth, our values and our identity. By connecting with our truth, we step into the driver’s seat of our lives, we can start curating how we wish to feel, what we wish to show up in our lives, and what we wish to give our attention to.

When to buy organic

People often ask me if I always buy everything organic, but I’ll be the first to tell you that health coaches definitely aren’t always perfect!

What really matters is how the food was grown. Some smaller farms use all organic practices but haven’t gone through the full organic certification process yet because it can be expensive for a small business. Get to know your local farms and stands and the farmers’ market and ask about the farm’s practices. ( Naples area Inyoni Organic Farm). When shopping at traditional grocery stores, I use the Dirty Dozen with the most pesticides and Clean 15 with the least pesticides lists to choose what produce I’ll buy organic.

Ultrasound Cavitation Peel

Exfoliation is important in any skincare routine. It allows the other parts of your routine to become more effective. Unlike harsher physical exfoliators that can cause micro-tears on the skin, Ultrasound Cavitation/Water Peel is considered the most gentle method of mechanical exfoliation and can be used on almost anyone. It is a great hydrating treatment and exfoliant for dehydrated skin, and is also very effective in the treatment of rosacea.

Ultrasound waves and high-frequency vibrations along with mineralized water work together to elevate stratum corneum and push out superficial impurities. They also penetrate into facial muscles and perform micro-massage, stimulating blood flow.

This treatment is performed in my Studio as a form of exfoliation after cleansing and before toning to ensure maximum product absorption;  creating clearer, smoother and plumper skin.

Ionic Dry-Brushing

Have you ever heard the saying — you need to see something three times before it sticks? Well this is how I added dry brushing to my beauty routine.

Upgrade your dry brushing game with PRANA Energy Brush, made with bronze bristles that contain real copper and zinc.

PRANA ionic body brushes are made with extra-fine ion-charged copper bristles, which naturally create negative ions that protect your body from free radicals and have numerous other health benefits. In addition, the molecular composition of unique bristles encourages the direct and immediate absorption of negative ions into your skin, which increases the benefits of dry brushing, including the speed of detoxification.

First off – dry brushing is super easy. Even though some of them do — this brush requires no oil. The band on the back gives you a good grip making it super comfortable to hold. The brush doesn’t move around or slip off my hand.

I dry brush before I shower in the mornings. By having a shower afterward, you wash off the dirt that has been loosened up by brushing. Failing to shower after brushing may not improve your skin in any way as the dirt is still on your skin and capable of causing more problems, such as acne.

It takes me about 3-4 minutes to do my whole body (I skip my face, neck and décolleté). I use very gentle/smooth long strokes. I start at the soles of my feet and then work my way up my body. I stroke my dry brush in the direction of my heart. That means brushing upwards for parts of your body that are below your heart, such as your legs. For other parts like the armpits brush downwards, still towards the heart. The purpose of brushing towards the heart is to encourage the normal lymph flow within your body.

Alcohol + Skin

I am not a heavy drinker, but I do enjoy having a drink when I am out with friends. Different alcohols have different effects on the skin, but as a general rule, the clearer, the better: vodka, gin, and tequila get out of your system quicker.

Dehydration is the issue — Because it is a diuretic, alcohol pushes water out of the body and leaves skin, dehydrated, dry and flaky. It  also has an inflammatory effect on our bodies, which can cause skin to look red and puffy. Alcohol can lead to poor liver function, reduced immunity, hormone disruption, and cell damage.

Often times people combine alcohol with sugary juices and mixers. Sugar is considered a key factor in the premature ageing skin. It decreases the elasticity of the skin, enlarges pores and can lead to fine lines, breakouts and a dull complexion.

My advice would be to cut back on the alcohol. When you’re 20 years old and drink, that drink leaves your body in about three hours. When you’re 40 years old, it takes an average of 33 hours. If your transit time is three hours, that means you can drink on Monday and by Tuesday, it’s out of your body. If you’re 40 and you drink on Monday, don’t drink until Wednesday. Minimize to once or twice a week—the lower the intake, the lower the damage to your skin. If you’re going to drink, drink water with it to increase that diuretic effect.

a smudge a day keeps the germs away

a smudge a day keeps the germs ? away… The earthy smell of burning sage, quickly releases the knots in your stomach as you breath it in, while the light and relaxing scent of lavender dispels your headache. In addition sage contains natural microbial and anti-bacterial properties. Burning it, releases these, helping kill off airborne bacterial, fungal and viral pathogens. A scientific study proved that burning sage or smudge for one hour, eliminated 94% of the airborne bacteria in a room, and the results lasted up to 24 hours.

Unlike chemical air “purifiers” that only mask the smells in the air, sage is 100% natural and will not cause allergic reactions for people with scent sensitivities. You should be able to find sage stick at your local natural food store or essential oils store. If both places don’t carry them, the staff should know where you can buy them. Whether the season is summer, spring, fall or winter, it is a good idea to clean the air in your home regularly to get rid of germs and all the other unhealthy things you don’t want your family to breathe in.

Sagging Eyelids

sagging Eyelids
Woman getting a facial massage

The skin on your eyes is the thinnest skin on the face. As we age, our skin produces less and less collagen – the protein which is responsible for keeping the skin tight and plump. Eyelids are thin and thus more prone to aging because there is no lipidic layer and very few collagen fibers.  So it is natural for them to start to lose elasticity and sag earlier than other parts of your face.

I believe that facial massage is the best way to non-invasively lift sagging eyelids. You can use Facial Roller Massager ( I recommend Cooling Metal Facial Roller Massager with Zinc Alloy ) and begin with stimulating the frame of the face, 1-2 inches into the hairline. Work your way to the frontalis (the largest muscle of the forehead). Then, start massaging along your brow by using a pinching and lifting motion. 5-7 minutes of massage a day will give you results. Consistency is key!

Dates protect the adrenals & prevent fatigue

Dates contain anti-inflammatory and anti-infective properties which make it an excellent food for those who suffer with chronic infections and auto-immune disorders. They also help to control heart rate and blood pressure which offers protection against strokes and coronary heart diseases. Dates contain an easily digestible fiber that has been found to help prevent colon, prostate, lung, endometrial, breast, and pancreatic cancers.

Dates are an ideal food for improved energy and brain function. They are a good source of vitamin A & B-complex and they are rich in minerals such as iron, calcium, manganese, copper, and potassium. Dates are known to help build bone and muscle strength and have been used for thousands of years by athletes to improve physical endurance, agility, and stamina. They are also known to help lower LDL (bad) cholesterol, relieve constipation, improve anemia, and prevent macular degeneration.

Medjool dates are one of the most popular dates for there king size and delicious meaty flavor. Dates are also delicious when added to smoothies and/or salads. They can also be chopped with walnuts, coconut, ginger or other spices and pressed into homemade energy bars and deserts.

Décolletage SkinCare

Most of us have been cleansing and moisturising since we were in high school but how many pay attention to our chest? The skin on the décolletage is very fragile as it produces less oil than the face, but also often receives more sun exposure so forgetting to apply SPF and neglecting to nourish it can result in premature ageing quicker than you’d imagine.

Reminding people that the face actually encompasses the neck and décolletage, helps them to take better care of these areas.  In the Studio, we perform Microneedling Treatment – it creates small, micro-punctures in the dermis for increased cellular turnover, collagen production, plumpness and tightness of skin, resurfacing and retexturizing, and allows for deeper penetration of products) as well as Red LED lights Treatments which also target wrinkles and stimulate the production of collagen.  At home, one of my favorite tips is to treat your body from the jawline to the toes and your face from the nipples to the forehead so that your neck and décolletage get double the treatment!

High Frequency Facial

We use a variety of technologies in each of our customized treatments depending on a client’s skin condition on the day that we see them. High frequency is used in our facials to treat acne, stimulate collagen production, and increase blood flow, resulting in a clearer, brighter complexion.

High frequency safely stimulates the skin using thermal energy which triggers blood flow and creates ozone, an activated form of oxygen that has three oxygen atoms and provides a more abundant supply to cells is formed by the argon gas in the electrode and the electrical current. This increases cellular turnover, kills harmful bacteria and diminishes inflammation, which reduces and treats acne. We harness the electrical current through a wand device with a glass electrode to safely transfer it directly into your skin.
